We’re so excited to welcome you to Portugal for our wedding in August 2026!

To help make your trip smooth and stress-free, we’ve gathered everything you need to know

about traveling to Porto.

Where to Stay

We will be staying at Hotel Pestana Palácio do Freixo.

Alternatively, Douro Riverside Hotel is a short walk away.

Porto offers a wide range of excellent hotels and Airbnbs for those interested.

Feel free to explore the options that suit you best.

Entry & Visa Requirements

If you're traveling from outside the European Union, you’ll need a valid passport to enter Portugal. For most nationalities, including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, a tourist visa is not required for stays of up to 90 days. Citizens of EU/EEA countries can travel with just a national ID card. At this time, no travel visas are required for guests traveling from the US to Portugal, but we’ll be sure to keep everyone informed should that change.

Check visa requirements for your country.

Arriving in Portugal

The best way to reach Porto is by flying into Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), the city’s main international airport.

It’s located about 20 minutes from the city centre and is well-connected to numerous European cities, with connecting flights available from major international hubs like Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt, and London. Once you arrive, you can easily get into town by taxi, Uber, or metro (Line E – the purple line connects the airport directly to central Porto).

Getting to Porto

You can rent a car, book a private transfer, or take public transport the city center.

Ride apps like Uber and Bolt also operate from the airport.

Getting Around Porto

Porto is a walkable city, and much of its charm is best enjoyed on foot. The historical centre is compact, though quite hilly, so we recommend packing comfortable shoes – especially as many streets are cobbled. For longer distances, the city has an efficient public transportation system, including metro, buses, and the famous historic trams. You can use a rechargeable Andante card to access all of them. Taxis are readily available, and Uber, Bolt, and Free Now also operate reliably throughout the city.

The Douro Valley, just a short drive from Porto, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most stunning wine regions in the world. Famous for its terraced vineyards along the Douro River, this picturesque area offers breathtaking views, charming villages, and the opportunity to visit some of the best wine estates in Portugal. You can take a relaxing river cruise, explore the local wineries and cellars, or even enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal in one of the many rustic restaurants with views over the valley. Whether you’re a wine lover or simply looking to experience the natural beauty of the region, the Douro Valley is a must-see during your visit to Porto.

Lisbon, Portugal’s vibrant capital, is a city of rich history, stunning architecture, and a lively atmosphere. Spread across seven hills, it offers breathtaking views, charming neighborhoods, and a blend of tradition and modernity. From the iconic yellow trams and the historic streets of Alfama to the bustling nightlife of Bairro Alto and the delicious pastéis de nata, Lisbon captivates with its unique charm. With a mild climate, scenic riverfront, and welcoming culture, it’s a city that invites exploration at every turn.
